| This temple is built of soapstone is in the Hoysala style with an entrance from the south but
the garbhagriha faces from east. In plan, it consists of garbhagriha, a sukanasi (antarala)
and Navaranga. The entrance mukhamantapa has a kakshasana on which the pillars stand.
The lintel has an inscription which mentions Jakanacharya (Ref Epi. Indica) date 13th Century.
The greatest conservation problem is that almost all the lintels, 12 in having simple mouldings,
have cracked and supports have been given. The major measure to be undertaken is to replace
these cracked lintels by new ones matching in texture. The alternate proposal is to insert an
I-section in the original cracked lintels and remove the modern accretion given by way of
supporting pillars.
An examination of the roof revealed that the concrete has decayed and needs to be replaced.
The beautiful shikhara and the plastered walls are in tact. But grouting of the joints and recess
pointing in matching lime cement mortar are necessary.
The Kakshsana stones have suffered some damage. Fortunately there is neither any sign of sinking
of the temple nor any other major structural disturbance.
The foundation of the temple may be examined for any grouting if needed. The lower courses
of the adhisthana are to be exposed by excavation and flagstones of granite may be provided
to avoid seepage of water.
The open area around the temple should be leveled and drainage has to be provided. |
