Major Structural Repairs

This temple when viewed very keenly, we can observe that it was constructed according to the style of sculptures of Chalukyas and Vijayanagar times. In the interior of this temple, there are two Garbhagriha. One is the main place Panchalingeshwara temple, another to the north is the Mahadeva temple. Mahadeva temple is constructed a little late according to Dr. Gururaja Bhat. The main Panchalingeshwara Garbhagriha belongs to the 8th Century. This temple is according to Gajaprasthakara, and in the Navaranga the sculptures of Pillars resembles that of Badami Chalukya's time. Inside the Garbhagriha, on only one Panipeetha, Lord Eshwara's five faces (namely Sadyojatha, Satwarusha, Vamadeva, Ishana, Agora) has been installed in one panipeetha. The lingas looks like sculptured on common stones. In this way, on only one panipeetha, five lingas are installed and Archana is done to the idol, and this is the speciality of our district.

In the Navaranga, as a witness of olden days there are three attractive idols. The four shouldered Ganesha's idol which belongs to the 9-10th C is also attractive. In the upper hands, there are Pashankusha and lower hands it is holding Modhaka. The long straight trunk which is facing downwards, long ears and possessing strong Yagnopavitha, altogether it is a very different idol. So also the sculptures which are bulged such as that of Sri Janardhana and Mahishamardhini idols belongs to 8-9 C. Among other idols of this temple, the Brahmachari Skanda which belongs to 8th C is about 2 ¾ feet in height. This idol which has two shoulders, is made from light red stone, which wears Koupina, which has worn a Danda and Kunkuta is altogether a different idol. Likewise the idol of Aditya which resembles the sculpture of this idol, which is made from the same type of rock, and is beautifully architectured. This idol is worth to get an important place in National exhibition. Another wooden idol which cannot be erased from mind, which has very different carvings is of Lord Sadhashiva, is also very attractive.

Both the Garbhagriha of the temple has only one Pouli, but has two different doors. The exterior of the temple has fallen down. In the southern part, it has a madyaugina Ganesha Idol. The Gopura which is on the opposite side of this temple belongs to the Vijayanagar period. These carving works are done very delicately which has stone pillars and main door. In these pillars, carvings of veena and other musical instruments, bulged idols of those who do Mallayudha, Garuda, killing by Kali, etc are the different carvings on the pillars. That which attracts the tourists among all others is the bulged idols of monkeys, which are standing with folded hands facing Naga. On the opposite side of the temple, Chippi Hanuman's temple and Bairava temples are there. On the opposite side of Bairava temple, on one of the pillars, it is engraved human sacrifice symbolizing human sacrifice, which was prevalent there, and it is also engraved on a stone indicating this practice. On the eastern direction of Panchalingeshwara, even now we can find the clothes of many devotees who were related to this temple in the Vinayaka temple. Here the idol of Vinayaka with two shoulders is very attractive and it belongs to 9-10 C.
